What is Caregiver Support?

Caregiver support is help that you get from others when you are caring for a person who is aging, ill, or has a disability. Most caregivers are family members or close friends who care for a loved one. Caregiving can be rewarding, especially when help is there for you. Most caregivers need help because caring for someone can be hard. Caregivers who have help are better able to take care of themselves and the person they love.

What programs and services are available for Caregiver Support?

Help can come from family members, friends and neighbors. Community organizations, private home care agencies, and religious organizations can also help you care for your loved one. Caregiver support services that can give you a break include adult day care and respite services. Other services that may also be available include companion services, homemaker services, meal delivery, transportation services, and personal care or personal assistance services for the person you are caring for. There are also support groups which can provide education, emotional support and an opportunity to exchange coping skills with other caregivers.
